South Carolina becomes first East Coast state to adopt full ‘Stop As Yield’ bicycle law

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — South Carolina is making history in bicycle safety after Governor Henry McMaster signed the “Stop As Yield” bill into law, making the state the first on the East Coast to fully adopt the policy.

The new law, known by supporters as the “Palmetto Stop,” changes how people riding bicycles can approach intersections.

Under the law, cyclists can treat stop signs as yield signs when it is safe to proceed. At red lights, cyclists must still come to a complete stop, but they may move through the intersection once they determine the way is clear…
