In September 2024, Alachua County sheriff’s deputies responded to what would become the foundation of a serious criminal case in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. A 13-year-old girl had been shot inside her own home, and the person who pulled the trigger was her mother.
Talecka C. Brown, now 33, was sentenced on June 18, 2026, to 50 years in a Maryland state prison following her conviction on four counts: attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The sentencing was handled by the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.
What happened the night of the shooting
According to court records, Brown and her daughter were involved in a heated argument inside the family’s Seat Pleasant residence that escalated into a physical confrontation. As the altercation continued, the teenager moved away from her mother and headed toward a staircase. Brown fired a single shot. The bullet struck the girl in the back of the neck.
The teenager collapsed at the bottom of the stairs and could not move after being hit. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Medical staff documented a severe gunshot wound to the upper spinal region. Bullet fragments were located near the girl’s shoulder and abdomen.
