LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — With high temperatures forecasted to reach into the 90s in the week ahead, the City of Lansing is activating its Code Red extreme heat weather plan.
The emergency weather plan includes opening several cooling centers throughout the region to help keep residents out of the heat. Code Red services will begin on June 29 and will run until July 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Lansing’s four community centers and the Lansing City Hall will be open for cooling during the following days and hours:
- Letts Community Center, 1220 West Kalamazoo Street
- Monday: 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Tuesday – Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Friday: Closed for July 4 holiday
- Saturday & Sunday: Closed
- Gier Community Center, 2400 Hall Street
- Monday: 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Tuesday – Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Friday: Closed for July 4 holiday
- Saturday & Sunday: Closed
- Alfreda Schmidt Southside Community Center, 5825 Wise Road.
- Monday: 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Tuesday – Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
- Friday: Closed for July 4 holiday
- Saturday & Sunday: Closed
- Lansing City Hall Lobby, 124 West Michigan Avenue

Capital Area District Libraries Lansing branches and the CATA Transportation Center will also be available to help residents get out of the heat. The operating hours for those locations are as follows:

- Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Friday – Saturday: Closed for July 4 holiday
- Sunday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Capital Area District Library South Lansing Branch, 3500 South Cedar Street
- Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Friday – Saturday: Closed for July 4 holiday
- Sunday: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- CATA Transportation Center, 420 South Grand Avenue

Hitting a public pool or a local park with water access is a great way to beat the summer heat. Hunter Park Pool and Hawk Island County Park are open during the following hours:
- Hunter Park Pool & Splash Pad, 1400 Fuller Street
- Open daily: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Saturday, July 4 hours: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Hawk Island County Park Beach & Splash Pad, 1601 E Cavanaugh Road
- Open daily: 8 a.m. until sunset
Residents currently experiencing homelessness have additional cooling center shelter options. Hours of those locations are as follows:
- Advent House Ministries, 743 North Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
- Open daily: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- The Lansing Nest, 332 Townsend South
- Open daily: 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- City Rescue Mission of Lansing, 415 West Kalamazoo Street.
