TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — More than 100 new state laws are now in effect, including one known as “Missy’s Law,” which targets those convicted of dangerous crimes.
The new law was named to honor 5-year-old Missy Mogle, who was killed by her stepfather after he was allowed to remain out on bond on a separate conviction.Mogle was killed in Tallahassee by her stepfather, Daniel Spencer, after a Leon County judge, Tiffany Backer-Carper, allowed him to remain out on bail waiting for his sentencing after being convicted of traveling to meet a minor for sex.“And what happened between that decision and the time he was sentenced, he murdered Missy,” Governor Ron DeSantis said at the new laws’ bill signing.
Missy’s Law now requires a court to hold suspects without bond if they plead guilty, or are found guilty, while awaiting sentencing for a dangerous crime – including arson, aggravated assault, child abuse and sexual battery…
