Franklin County kicks off July 4th festivities with annual mullet contest

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Franklin County’s Fourth of July festivities kicked off at the Rocky Mount Independence Day festival with music, food, fireworks, prizes and a competition that’s become a signature part of the celebration: the annual mullet contest.

The Independence Day festival drew contestants of all ages, from kids to adults, showing off their best “business in the front, party in the back” looks in hopes of impressing the judges.

Asked what he brought to the competition, one contestant said, “My luscious locks.”
