Multiple train cars derail, fall into Kanawha Canal in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Three train cars have fallen into Richmond’s Kanawha Canal following a train derailment Friday afternoon, with two cars still unstable.

Just after 4 p.m. on Friday, July 3, crews with the Richmond Fire Department were called to the intersection of Dock and 20th Streets for report of a train derailment.

Officials said that three cars from a 200-car train derailed, falling from the railway bridge and down into the Kanawha Canal. Photos from the scene show what appears to be damage to the bridge, likely caused by the cars as they fell.

Two additional cars remain unstable, with fire officials saying their immediate goal is to stabilize the train…
