SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, it’s fitting to reflect on our own city’s history and role in it all.
San Diego was established on July 16, 1769. The city has been called the birthplace of California because it’s where Spanish settlers set up the first mission. Before their arrival, the Kumeyaay people had lived along the San Diego riverbanks for thousands of years.
In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain, and the following year, a new military command created a community in an area of San Diego now known mostly as Old Town State Historical Park. The buildings they erected still stand today…
