WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A 39-year-old inmate serving time for a kidnapping and assault in Sedgwick County died in state custody over the weekend.
The Kansas Department of Corrections said George Eugene Phillips was found unresponsive in his cell at Lansing Correctional Facility on Sunday. Staff and emergency medical personnel tried to revive him but were unsuccessful, the department said. His cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Phillips was serving a 577-month sentence for convictions of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, criminal threat and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Sedgwick County. The crimes happened in 2021, when Phillips was shot by police during a domestic violence call.
