Two parasitic viruses causing explosive diarrhea, 10 confirmed cases in Bexar County

SAN ANTONIO – Tx — Two parasitic viruses are spreading across the country. Cyclosporiasis and cryptosporidium have been reported across the U.S. since May. At least 10 cases of cryptosporidium have been reported in Bexar County. The viruses both cause similar symptoms, but they are contracted in different ways.

“When you get sick with cyclosporiasis, the kind if symptoms you would see include things like watery diarrhea,” Dr. Kiran Joshi said. “It can be really frequent and pretty severe.”

Officials at University Health say the 10 known cases of cryptosporidium in Bexar County is anormal range for this time of year. Cryptosporidium is resistant to standard chlorine in pools. It can also spread through infected animals and person to person contact…
