Mark Sampson, a caregiver from Arizona, is facing one count of child or vulnerable adult abuse under circumstances likely to produce death or serious physical injury, in relation to an incident that occurred at a group home for disabled people. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office filed a charge against Sampson, a Class 2 felony, in connection with a March 19 incident. Authorities filed the charges on June 26, per ABC 15 Arizona.
The 47-year-old, who is a certified caregiver at a Phoenix group home, allegedly gagged a non-verbal man with a washcloth and tied socks “around his face,” per the outlet. The victim has cerebral palsy and the incident reportedly hindered his breathing. The unidentified victim’s care plan required any caregiver to always be “within hearing distance of him.”

According to the probable cause affidavit, Sampson allegedly entered the victim’s room around midnight on March 18. He allegedly spent considerable time there until leaving before 6:00 a.m. on March 19 to attend to another patient.
