‘It is just hard’: Fat Rabbit asks customers on social media to keep shopping local

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Local businesses like Fat Rabbit in Richmond’s Church Hill are feeling the financial pinch, and using social media as a call for people to shop local. Inflation rates are up by two percent, and it’s been harder and harder to get customers in the door spending what disposable income they have.

Owner Ellyn Hopper said she just wants to be real with customers and knows everyone is feeling this pinch right now. The post has been shared over 700 times, even by some other small business owners who say they understand.

“We gotta keep the lights on, we gotta keep our staff paid,” Hopper told 8News. “Everybody is going through the same thing.”

Hopper created Fat Rabbit in 2019 and has been in their current space since 2021. The heart and soul of the business is cake, but pastries and coffee allow people to stop in for a quick treat…
