‘I’ve run from a few tornadoes’: Kansas veteran put love of weather to use in Army

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Oklahoma native Gary Parks grew up with a passion for weather, which led to him becoming a ballistic meteorologist when he was drafted into the Army in 1966.

“I’ve run from a few tornadoes in my life, especially in Oklahoma,” he said.

After finishing meteorology school, Parks’ skills were need in Vietnam, where he used weather balloons to provide atmospheric information to artillery units so they could better hit their targets…
