WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita police are warning people of an online scam that targets people looking for a place to live.
Police said scammers are posting fake house or apartment rentals on social media and online marketplaces and convincing people to send money before seeing the property.
“After making contact by text, the ‘landlord’ asks for an application fee, then sends a fake lease and requests a deposit or first month’s rent through Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or another payment app,” WPD wrote on Facebook. “Once the money is sent, the victim later finds out the property isn’t actually available or the person never owned it.”
