‘A friend to everyone’: Beloved Maymont bear with dwarfism, hormonal issues humanely euthanized

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A beloved bear with congenital dwarfism and hormonal complications at Maymont in Richmond was “humanely euthanized,” park officials said on Friday.

On Friday, July 10, a spokesperson for the public park, located at 1700 Hampton St., shared that Little Bear’s condition was “beyond treatment,” despite care and medications by staff and attending veterinarians providing relief from his symptoms.

Little Bear, who was 21, required close monitoring and medications since he was a yearling in May 2006. He had recently shown no interest in food due to complications of his congenital dwarfism and related hormonal issues, which park authorities said were similar to Addison’s disease, the release said…
