Yesterday’s commute through Kearny Mesa turned violent when a driver allegedly opened fire on another vehicle on the transition ramp from eastbound State Route 52 to southbound Interstate 15, injuring at least one person and bringing traffic to a crawl.
The targeted vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was carrying two women and a 7-year-old child. Authorities have not released the child’s condition. The shooting triggered a major law enforcement response and later an arrest connected to the attack.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the California Highway Patrol said the violence broke out around 8:35 PM, when a Volkswagen driver allegedly opened fire on the Explorer as it merged onto the southbound I-15. The Explorer’s driver was taken to a hospital, and the CHP told the paper that the person’s condition was not immediately available. Investigators said the suspect fled the area, and officers later arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder and a weapons-related charge.
