OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Oklahoma is among the expanding number of states reporting a climb in Cyclospora parasite cases, with the Oklahoma State Department of Health having confirmed 56 cases so far.
According to the CDC, Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite, also known as Cyclospora. Those who consume food or water that contains the parasite can become infected, but it is not known to be life-threatening.
Common symptoms of those who are infected include watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. Other symptoms can include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting, body aches, a headache, low-grade fever, and other flu-like symptoms can also be experienced.
