FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – As the conversation continues on homeless services in Fort Wayne, recent cease-and-desist letters show one way city officials are working to retain those services for locals.
The letters came to light following rumors that large numbers of people have been dropped off and left to rely on homeless services in Fort Wayne rather than their own hometown.
But the violation notices sent by City of Fort Wayne attorneys cite just three instances of that happening. According to the cease and desist, two men from a mental hospital and a third man from an addiction treatment center were all brought from Indianapolis to The Rescue Mission in downtown Fort Wayne.
City of Fort Wayne responds to proposed homeless center concerns
In March, Fort Wayne City Council unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting the relocation of unhoused individuals from outside the Summit City, with some exceptions. Those responsible for transporting homeless people to Fort Wayne from elsewhere could be handed a $2,500 fine.
