Former Texas running back makes shocking HBCU move

Ahead of the start of football season, an HBCU football team is landing a former Texas running back. Morehouse College has secured the recruitment of Savion Red, a former Texas running back who had stints at Nevada, Texas, and Sacramento State. Red posted the news to his social media accounts on Monday. The addition is a huge recruiting win for Morehouse College head coach Brad Sherrod, who is in his first season leading the program following the firing of former head football coach Terrence Mathis.

Red emerged during his high school career as one of the best football players in Texas. He played at Grand Prairie High School as a wildcat quarterback, showcasing his ability to succeed in the passing game and also create with his legs. He rushed for 1,367 yards and 20 touchdowns while throwing for 857 yards in his final season. His play earned him District 8-6A MVP honors and led him to be one of the state’s top recruits, and he elected to stay in state by first committing to SMU.

He then switched his commitment to Steve Sarkisian and Texas, where he changed positions to play wide receiver. He then transitioned fully to being a running back in the 2023 season. He was a part of the Longhorns team that made the College Football Playoff, rushing for 131 yards and a touchdown…
