Granddaughter of atomic bomb architect J. Robert Oppenheimer visited Pantex

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A visit to the Pantex Plant’s Alternate Emergency Operations Center recently brought a personal connection to one of the most recognizable figures of the atomic age, even though J. Robert Oppenheimer himself never set foot at the site.

Dr. Dorothy (Oppenheimer) Vanderford, Oppenheimer’s granddaughter, recently visited the Pantex Alternate Emergency Operations Center. A contractor for the Department of Energy, Dr. Vanderford works within the National Security Enterprise.

Her visit concentrated on the Emergency Communications Network Program (ECNP), which supports communications at government sites as part of the national security framework. Alongside her familial connection to the architect of the atomic bomb, Pantex said Vanderford’s presence illuminated “the human story behind nuclear deterrence.”…
