Family of Bernalillo Co. deputy killed in helicopter crash settles lawsuit

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) — Thursday marks four years since a Bernalillo County Sheriff Office’s helicopter crashed, killing all four first responders on board. The anniversary comes with a resolution.

In July 2022, BCSO’s “Metro Two” helicopter crashed and killed Undersheriff Larry Koren, Lieutenant Fred Beers, Deputy Michael Levison, and Captain Matthew King. The helicopter crew was helping fight wildfires in Las Vegas when it crashed.

Adding to the families’ pain, they soon learned the crash could’ve been prevented. A report from the National Transportation Safety Board shows the accident was caused by “poor maintenance,” as a piece of metal was found in the chopper’s oil system just hours before the flight…
