Marcus Sapp spent 13 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit. Now the state of Ohio is beginning to pay for that mistake.
The Ohio Controlling Board has approved a payment of $506,717.03 to Sapp after the Ohio Court of Claims ruled he was wrongfully imprisoned, making him eligible for compensation under state law. Sapp qualifies for roughly $68,000 for every year he lost behind bars, and this payment represents the first installment of that total, which state law requires within 60 days of a wrongful imprisonment finding.
