Family reunites with Shelby County first responders after roadside birth

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A Shelby County family recently reunited with the first responders who helped deliver their daughter after she was born in the family’s vehicle before they could make it to the hospital.

The reunion came eight months after Matt and Jessica welcomed their second daughter, Emma Grace, in an unexpected roadside delivery on Nov. 5.

According to the Shelby County Fire Department, the couple was driving to a doctor’s appointment when Jessica realized they wouldn’t make it. She told her husband to pull over, and Emma Grace was born moments later while their older daughter, Avery, waited patiently in the back seat.

Matt immediately called 911. Because the family was near the border of Collierville and Shelby County, dispatchers at the Collierville Police Department coordinated with Shelby County Fire Department dispatchers to ensure help arrived without delay.

Collierville police officers were the first to reach the family and began caring for Jessica and the newborn. Shelby County firefighters arrived shortly afterward, cut the umbilical cord, assessed both mother and baby, and took over patient care before they were transported to a hospital…
