Less than 24 hours after Picklesburgh kicked off, Pittsburgh was under a Code Purple for its air quality, an alert indicating that the city would see very unhealthy air because of wildfire smoke.
On the first day of the pickle-themed festival, wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota descended on the city, causing hazardous conditions during the late afternoon and evening. The state department of environmental protection issued a Code Purple across Pennsylvania for July 17, as outdoor conditions were expected to be very unhealthy.
