A dog found with a wire tether cutting deep into his neck has made a remarkable recovery and found a forever home as new protections for tethered pets pass in Phoenix.

According to a Thursday, July 16 press release from the Arizona Humane Society, Loki, a 4-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier, was rescued on May 22 after shelter rescuers discovered him with severe wounds covering about 60% of his neck.

Veterinarians believe Loki was originally tethered outdoors with a plastic-coated wire lead, wrapped twice around his neck, and a nylon collar. At some point, he became entangled and eventually chewed through the wire to free himself before being found as an injured stray.

After rescuers found the suffering dog, Loki was rushed to the Arizona Humane Society’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, where staff cleaned his wounds, applied medicated honey bandages, administered fluids and antibiotics, and performed surgery after a week of intensive treatment…
