Governor Kathy Hochul’s decision to halt development of large-scale data centers across New York has ignited a statewide debate, with supporters praising the move as an environmental safeguard while critics warn it could send billions of dollars in private investment – and thousands of high-paying jobs – to competing states.
On Tuesday, July 14th, Hochul signed an executive order imposing what her administration describes as the nation’s first statewide moratorium on the construction of certain large data centers. The temporary pause, which could remain in effect for up to one year, is intended to give state officials time to develop new regulations governing the rapidly expanding industry.
