OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WATE) — Domestic violence may not be as uncommon as you think, according to YWCA Knoxville & the Tennessee Valley.
Director of Victim Services Latoya Shephard said that while agencies like hers do engage with the community as much as possible, there is always more to be done when it comes to bringing awareness to warning signs or educating the public on what domestic violence is.
This, as the number of people, specifically women, who are facing this violence is increasing. According to KPD of the aggravated assault reports it received last year, 46% were believed to be domestic in nature compared to 40% the year prior.

“So domestic violence, it affects individuals, families and communities every single day,” said Shephard, “the statistic used to be one in four women were affected by domestic violence, but now that number has moved to one in two women are affected and are impacted by domestic violence.
