FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – The St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario and Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISMs) is hosting a hands-on workshop aimed at community engagement regarding the spotted lanternfly (SLF), an invasive species threatening New York State. The workshop will be held on August 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville.
Although SLF has not yet been found in Oneida, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties, it has been detected in nearby Onondaga County, underscoring the need for early awareness and detection.
According to PRISMs, the SLF (Lycorma delicatula) feeds on over 70 plant species, with its primary host being the invasive tree of heaven (TOH). The presence of SLF poses significant risks to ecological health by weakening native tree systems, adversely affecting agriculture—particularly vineyards and orchards—and degrading plant health due to its feeding behavior, which leads to harmful byproducts such as honeydew that attract other pests…
