NORTHERN OHIO — A severe weather risk is unfolding across northern Ohio Tuesday, with two rounds of storms expected to bring damaging winds, large hail, and a tornado threat to the region. Severity index tracking places damaging wind risk at 5 out of 10, with tornado and large hail threats each rated 3 out of 10, according to risk analysis covering the region.
First Round Already Moving Through Northwest Ohio
The first round of storms was already sliding east into northwest Ohio during the morning hours, producing torrential rainfall and showing signs of strengthening. Severe activity was expected to increase after 8 a.m., with damaging winds, hail, and a tornado risk all in play as the first wave moved through.
Probability shading on the severe risk map showed a range of threat levels stretching across the region, from 5 to 20 percent risk in western counties near Defiance and Celina up to 60 percent or higher in areas extending from Sandusky and Cleveland through Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and New Philadelphia.
Second Round Expected To Carry Bigger Punch
A second round of storms was expected to redevelop during the afternoon and evening hours, particularly east of Sandusky, carrying a higher threat for severe wind and tornado activity. The highest-probability zones for severe weather, shaded in red on the risk analysis map, stretched across Cleveland, Akron, Mansfield, Canton, New Philadelphia, Zanesville, and Youngstown.
Flooding risk was also rated 3 out of 10 across the outlook area, with cities including Toledo, Bowling Green, Lima, Marion, Columbus, Springfield, Dayton, and Lancaster falling within the broader forecast zone. The overall severe weather risk was expected to run nearly all day, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with only a short break between the two rounds.
