The Alabama Public Charter School Commission last week approved a new policy that would allow charter schools to merge under one governing board.
APCSC Executive Director Logan Searcy said during the commission’s meeting that the new policy could be used in case of an “enrollment concern.”
“Our charter schools and our traditional school systems are funded on the number of students we have. So if enrollment declines, then the state funding also declines,” Searcy said in an interview on Friday. “So we don’t want that to be a situation for our charters, so we are just looking toward the future, so that if such a situation were to occur, we would have a mechanism for them to be able to merge, to have an enrollment that would be sustainable financially.”…
