Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said Tuesday that the feds freezing his family’s bank accounts for six months and seizing money for his restitution has resulted in the Oakland County Treasurer’s Office threatening to foreclose and take his $1.1 million Novi home for unpaid taxes.
“None of this was necessary, according to any ordinary, normal or just process, whatsoever,” he tells Deadline Detroit. “This has been an intentional infliction of emotional and mental and financial distress” on the part of the federal government. He said the accounts were frozen from December 2025 until early June.
Robert Snell of The Detroit News reported Tuesday that Oakland County Treasurer Robert Wittenberg’s office and Kilpatrick’s homeowners association gave notice that he could lose his home through forfeiture if back taxes aren’t paid by next year.
