The Sparks Police Department is alerting residents to an increase in phone scams involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers. Authorities say these scammers use fear, urgency, and false claims to deceive victims and obtain money. We have also received reports of scammers using the names of actual law enforcement officers to appear more credible.
In these scams, callers falsely identify themselves as law enforcement officials and claim the victim has missed jury duty, has an outstanding fine, or is the subject of an arrest warrant. The caller then pressures the victim to make an immediate payment through money transfers, prepaid debit cards, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. In some cases, scammers use caller ID spoofing technology to make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency or even from 911.
Officials urge residents to remain vigilant. Legitimate law enforcement agencies, including the Sparks Police Department, will never call and demand payment, request financial information, or require immediate action to avoid arrest.
