O.C. man shot dead after calling to report mental health crisis

A 20-year-old Irvine man was fatally shot after police said he charged at officers with a knife following more than an hour of crisis negotiations Tuesday.

According to an Irvine Police Department news release, the man called 911 around 11:45 a.m. and reported that he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was outside his home armed with a knife.

Officers assigned to the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team located him in a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Sungate and Silkwood and spent more than an hour attempting to persuade him to surrender peacefully, police said…
