Amtrak, Norfolk Southern sued on behalf of fallen Easley officer Matthew Hare

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A federal lawsuit has been filed on behalf of fallen Easley Police Officer Matthew Hare against multiple railroad companies, alleging negligence and negligent supervision.

Officer Hare, 22, was killed in August 2023 while responding to a missing person call involving a woman authorities believed may be in danger of harming herself. Officer Hare was trying to get the woman off the tracks when he was hit by an oncoming train.

The lawsuit was filed on July 17, 2026 by Ashley Hare, individually and as the personal representative of Officer Hare’s estate. It names the defendants as National Railroad Passenger Corporation or Amtrak, Norfolk Southern Corporation, Norfolk Southern Railway Company and eight unnamed parties described as those who “were responsible in some sort for the operation, maintenance, and or control of the train, track and crossing warning system.”…
