JACKSONVILLE, FL — Jacksonville and nearby communities are under a red flag warning, the National Weather Service’s highest fire alert, as hot, dry and windy conditions combine across the region. The warning runs from noon to 8 p.m. today and means critical fire weather is either happening now or expected within 24 hours.
The area is also dealing with severe drought conditions, including parts of the region labeled exceptional and extreme on the latest drought monitor. Forecasters say the setup makes it easier for any spark to start a wildfire.
Why Fire Risk Is High
The warning was triggered by a mix of high temperatures, low humidity, strong winds and dry vegetation. Jacksonville is expected to reach 96 degrees today, with above-average heat likely to hang on for five straight days.
Wind gusts are expected to climb into the 20s and even 30s mph this afternoon, adding to the fire danger. Officials are warning that the region’s large rain deficit leaves the ground and grass especially vulnerable.
