LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Fayette County Public Schools leaders addressed the media Tuesday following Monday night’s board meeting, where district administrators revealed the district will close the fiscal year in a deficit.
The district spent more than it brought in, though the exact figure will not be known until September. Officials estimate the shortfall could fall between $5 million and $10 million.
More cuts on the way
District leaders said additional cuts are coming as a result of the deficit. Personnel — the district’s largest expense — cannot be reduced, as those jobs were secured as of mid-May. However, officials said there is a possibility the district may not fill vacancies or backfill positions.
The Kentucky Department of Education had previously told reporters it was providing technical assistance to the district. Chief Financial Officer Kyna Koch was asked what that assistance looked like and whether greater involvement would be necessary.
