King County dive unit member opens up about the emotional toll of drowning recoveries

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — On sunny summer days, Lake Sammamish fills with swimmers, paddleboarders and families looking to cool off.

For Detective Matthew Martin, those same crowds can be deceiving. Martin is one of the divers who responds when someone goes missing underwater in King County, as part of the King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Rescue Dive Unit.
