Lucky Stranger already feels like one of Birmingham’s favorite bars

The funny thing about Avondale’s Lucky Stranger is that it doesn’t feel new.

I walked in during friends and family night expecting to see the polished edges that usually come with a brand-new opening. Instead, it felt like it had always been there. String lights hung from corners, hugs and smiles stretched the length of the room, people settled into red vinyl booths like they belonged to them, and the whole space carried a lived-in comfort that’s nearly impossible to manufacture.

Lucky Stranger is certainly the kind of place Birmingham has always been good at creating: somewhere you wander into for one drink and somehow end up staying until closing. However, that feeling wasn’t accidental.
