VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia Beach City Council honored a Grammy-winning vocal group at its July 14 council meeting. They passed a resolution to designate Beasley Drive with the honoree title BLACKstreet Boulevard.
The group was formed in the early 90s when founder Chauncey Black lived in Virginia Beach, “right next to Beasley,” Black said.
During the meeting, Mayor Bobby Dyer said the group “got the creative culture going” in Virginia Beach–an area known for producing several Grammy winners, including Pharell Williams. A proclamation read during the meeting read in part, “Blackstreet played a central role in defining the R&B and Hip-hop crossover era, helping reshape the sound of mainstream music at a critical moment.”
