WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. — St. Clair County Animal Control and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office are investigating what officials describe as the largest animal hoarding case in the county in 19 years, after rescuing approximately 100 dogs from a Washington Park home earlier this week.
The dogs — mostly young Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus and other small mixed breeds — were found dirty and covered in fleas and ticks. Officials said they are expected to recover.
Dogs being transferred to shelters, foster homes
On Monday, animal control officers removed 76 dogs, four cats and nine birds from the property. As of Thursday, many of the dogs were being transferred to local shelters and foster homes, including Gateway Pet Guardians, Helping Strays, Metro East Humane and Belleville Area Humane Society.
