The crash
CHARLOTTE, NC — A former Maine high school swimming standout was killed early Sunday in a single-car crash in Charlotte. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said 22-year-old Keegan McKenney, of Cape Elizabeth, was in a BMW that ran off the road and hit a tree.
Police said all other passengers survived and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Investigators said everyone in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.

Officials said they are still looking into whether speed and alcohol played a role in the wreck. No additional details about the circumstances of the crash were immediately released.
The collision happened early Sunday morning, according to police. The investigation remains ongoing.
A college teammate
