MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Crews are in the middle of a major restoration project to preserve the Middle Bay Lighthouse, which has stood watch over the bay since 1885. Bay waters were as slick as glass as we made our way out to the historic lighthouse to see firsthand the work underway. Standing on iron pilings in the middle of Mobile Bay, it once served as a critical navigation aid for ships entering the Port of Mobile.
“Because until navigation aids got modernized, this was a major light, a major navigation aid, because there’s a bend in the channel,” said Art Thomas.
Thomas serves as the Middle Bay Lighthouse Chairman for the Alabama Lighthouse Association. He says more than a century of salt, wind and storms left the lighthouse in need of major repairs…
