ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A rapid price jump for the 20-year-old low-cost breakfast program at eight senior centers across Albuquerque is causing frustration around the community. Two weeks ago, breakfast prices for seniors tripled in price, and the menu was reduced, leaving many seniors on fixed incomes forced to stop coming to the low-cost social event. A discussion was held Friday morning at the Palo Duro Senior Center between concerned seniors and the city.

“Raise the price a little bit, but not three times as high,” affected senior Angi Gonzales Carver said. “But also the quality needs to come back, and the choices need to come back. Before, there were many items you could choose from, non-egg items.”
Hundreds of seniors in the city rely on the breakfast program at their local senior center for a low-cost meal and socialization. But with the price hike, many said they are being forced to stay home. Angi Gonzales Carver started coming to the breakfast program two years ago after her mother passed for social interaction.
