LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – Volunteers with the Friends of Lansing’s Historic Cemeteries gathered to clean the graves of boys who died while in the custody of the Boys’ Training School, which closed in 1933.
The group first marked the graves seven years ago and has returned each year since to clean all 61 burial markers.
“Well, we gave these guys their identity,” said Loretta Stanaway, president of the Friends of Lansing’s Historic Cemeteries. “We need to keep their identity visible and clear and available to people to see and understand that this is what is going on, that there are people here and that they lived and they passed away in the custody of the state, and their families couldn’t take care of them, so they’re here.”…
