NEWPORT BEACH, California — A Southern California woman accused of posing as an animal rescuer while allegedly keeping dozens of dogs in dangerous, unsanitary conditions has been released without posting bail, despite prosecutors arguing she should remain behind bars due to the seriousness of the case.
Priscilla Martin, 33, who authorities say is homeless, pleaded not guilty Thursday to three felony counts of animal cruelty by a caretaker, 11 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges, and one misdemeanor count related to disposing of the carcass of a dead animal.
If convicted on all counts, she could face up to 15 years and 10 months in California state prison.
