TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Only about half of the families who lined up at the Secor Road Verizon store were able to receive a free backpack on Sunday before supplies ran out during the store’s annual giveaway event.
The event is part of Verizon’s 14th annual “School Rocks Backpack” giveaway, which distributes $3 million worth of free backpacks to Verizon stores across the country. Each location receives approximately 100 bags to hand out.
Demand exceeds supply
Verizon employee Aja Miller said the turnout was significant.
“It’s a little bit soul crushing because I know that’s exactly what they came here for,” Miller said. “Like I said, they started forming their own line. Like they were obviously ready and obviously wanted this. Like they either needed it or it’s just something that, again, easily provided that would help their financial situation.”…
