Debbie Platts remembers her grandfather well, even decades after his death. She recalls riding up the curved driveway to his home, the “formal and proper” dinners he hosted for their family, his penchant for collecting stones.
“He was very kind. He always made very corny jokes,” she said while flipping through an old family album on a sunny Longmont porch. “That’s my grandfather, my father and my brother,” she said, pointing to one black-and-white photograph affixed to the album’s page.
Harlow Platts was among roughly 1,500 Boulder-area people who served during World War I before he returned home to work the family’s cutlery business. His legacy lives on in south Boulder, where Harlow Platts Community Park bears his name.
