Sheared Fire Hydrant in Downtown Santa Barbara

What might normally be a pleasant surprise on a hot day turned into a mess in downtown Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon when a pickup truck collided with a fire hydrant, sending a geyser of water shooting into the air.

The incident occurred on July 25 at the corner of Canon Perdido and Santa Barbara Streets, just steps from the historic Presidio.

Edhat readers reported that a dark-colored pickup truck struck the fire hydrant, shearing it and causing the dramatic water display. Fortunately, the spray was directed away from the Presidio, which dates back to 1782 and serves as one of Santa Barbara’s most treasured landmarks.
