ROCKFORD — A 144-year-old church in the city’s historic Haight Village could be revamped into 10 apartments with additional space for a restaurant and banquet hall under a new redevelopment plan.
The former Centennial United Methodist Church at 219 S. Second St. would be redeveloped in two phases, starting with the six two-bedroom and four one-bedroom apartments. Remediation work is underway at the building now. Pending City Council approval, construction could begin this fall, according to Jennifer Spencer, principal at Studio GWA, the architects on the project.
The church building, which was constructed in 1882, has been vacant for more than a decade. The apartments will be constructed in a classroom addition built in 1956. There’s no set timeline for when the restaurant and banquet portion of the project would move forward…
