NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Zoo is excited to welcome two new residents to their African Safari Trail, cheetahs Walnut and Cashew! These three-year-old male cheetahs are brothers and come to the Zoo from a private AZA facility. The two are a bonded pair that have been together since birth.
Unlike female cheetahs who remain solitary in the wild, male cheetahs become bonded for life with their brothers and form groups called coalitions. A coalition usually consists of two to three littermates and is a very tight-knit group.
Walnut and Cashew were not visible to the public at their previous facility, so they might take some time to slowly adjust to this new space and seeing unfamiliar people. The boys may be a little shy, so please be patient as they get comfortable in their new home.
