On a warm Friday afternoon by Crompton Park, a long line of children and their parents and guardians stretched from the entrance to the park’s swimming pool to a white box truck that was parked on the sidewalk, bearing the symbol of an apple and the words “Worcester Nutrition.”
As part of the nationwide Summer Food Service Program, also known as Summer Eats, Worcester Public Schools’ nutrition department provides free breakfast and lunch for children throughout the city, and many of the kids playing in the Crompton Park pool were looking for something tasty to eat.
“What can I tell you? We’re just here,” said a Summer Eats worker distributing chicken salad sandwiches, fresh fruit and milk cartons. “We come here every day and do what we’ve got to do.”…
